Orthodontics

“It’s easy to say we make people smile but it’s when my patients are truly happy, that I get my sense of purpose and satisfaction.”Dr. Chelian

Orthodontists are specialized dentists in moving your teeth using Braces or Invisalign. Braces are used to assist in aligning and straightening teeth in order to not only improve appearance, but improve a person’s bite. Straight teeth and having beautiful smile also means your teeth are healthy and less prone to periodontal disease. Orthodontics corrects various problems like, overbite, underbites, cross bites, deep bites, crooked teeth and other flaws of the teeth and jaws. Braces may be used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to help with making corrections to a person’s bite.

Dental technology has improved over the years to include new options to help correct the above issues, and there are a number of techniques and products available that were not available just a few short years ago. The patient experience has improved and today’s options are less conspicuous than the full braces that were common in the past.

Traditional metal braces are still the most popular because of the colors for kids but Clear Ceramic braces are popular with adults and teenagers who want the results of braces without the look of metal. Of course as a Premier Provider of Invisalign your options as an adult or teen is better than ever. Your visit will begin with a consultation with Dr. Chelian to go over the best alternatives for your orthodontic care. Dr. Chelian will address any questions you may have regarding your treatment and will provide the perfect plan for your healthy bite and Beautiful Smile.

Braces
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child see an orthodontist by age 7, and perhaps earlier if an orthodontic concern is identified. Around age 7, the first adult molars typically erupt, helping to define a patient’s back bite and allowing the orthodontist to more effectively evaluate the bite.

Treatment at this age may not be necessary, but orthodontic monitoring can help anticipate the ideal timeline for the most effective treatment and also help to prevent more serious problems in the future. Less than 20% of the kids need treatment this early.

Early treatments are growth modification treatments and when necessary, create amazing results on a child’s face, bite and self-esteem.

What is important to correct at this age? Underbites, Crossbites, Severe Overbites and more.

Some results of effective early treatment:

  • Reducing the need for tooth removal
  • Creating space for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Reducing the risk of injury to protruding front teeth
  • Preserving needed space for permanent teeth
  • Reducing future orthodontic treatment time
Metal braces made from stainless steel brackets and wires remain the most popular choice for braces and are very effective. These are the ones with colors! and yes the colors can be changed every visit.
Virtually invisible, Damon® Clear has clear advantages over traditional braces and aligners. Damon® Clear is part of the innovative Damon® System, which combines tieless braces with high technology archwires that are clinically proven to move teeth fast and comfortably with truly spectacular smile and facial results.

Available from skilled orthodontists, Damon® Clear combines the best of traditional clear braces and invisible aligners to deliver a discrete treatment experience with results that go beyond straight teeth.

Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.
Once treatment is complete, a retainer is worn for a period of time, usually just at night. The retainer helps maintain the new smile and also allows for small adjustments, if needed, once the braces have been removed.

There are Invisible retainers, wire and plastic retainer and fixed retainers. Dr. Chelian makes his decisions on retainers based on each individual patient depending on the the type of bite with which the patient started.

Surgical Orthodontics is performed to correct misalignments or other abnormalities in the upper jaw and lower jaws. Orthognathic correction is conducted in stages, and the course of treatment can last a few months up to one year or more.

In order to perform the procedure successfully, the jawbones will be surgically repositioned in accordance with the patient’s specific needs. Inconspicuous incisions are usually made inside, and if needed, outside the mouth to allow for surgical plates, screws, wires and rubber bands to be used to hold your jaws in their new positions.

Surgery will be performed in a hospital setting and will be performed by an oral surgeon. You should be able to return to school or work within 2 weeks, and after 4-6 weeks of healing, Dr. Chelian will begin “fine-tuning” your bite. Most patients wear their braces for 6-12 months, and after the braces are removed, you will wear a retainer to help complete your smile.
